NRA Women is designed for female gun enthusiasts. It's a resource for news, education, events and more. And we're telling more stories of empowered women like you. Come explore, connect, celebrate and unite with the women of NRA.
Growing up in Texas, I've been around guns all my life. My Dad took me to a range to shoot a real handgun for the first time when I was 10 years old. What an experience! But I didn't really develop a passion for shooting until after I had my Concealed Handgun License and decided I need to learn to use it properly. When you learn the correct fundamentals and your shooting improves, it's addicting!
Do you shoot handguns, shotguns, rifles or all of the above?
I primarily shoot and teach handguns. But I enjoy shooting my own AR-15 as well as my Benelli shotgun.
Why are you involved with the NRA or how do you support their efforts?
I believe the NRA has the background necessary to represent the citizens who support the Second Amendment. I support their efforts as an NRA certified instructor, teaching others not only how to shoot, but also the history and purpose of the NRA.
Tell us about the first gun you owned or your favorite gun.
The first gun I officially owned, not just in my household, was a Taurus PT-111. It's very difficult to pick out my favorite gun. I like many of them for different reasons. But if I were forced to choose, it would probably be the S&W M&P9.
What's your current go-to gun?
Wow...again a difficult choice! It would depend on the purpose. For concealed carry, I grab my Sig P238 or my S&W Shield. For shooting in matches, the M&P9 is my choice.
What's your favorite shooting range or place to hunt?
I am blessed to have so many ranges within driving distance of my home. I love them all.
Do you have a favorite accessory or clothing item you won't go shooting or hunting without? What makes it so important?
My M&P9 is never without a Brilliant Back strap to jazz it up just a little bit. I can pick from multiple colors to match my mood!
What's your most unusual gun-related item?
The most unusual gun-related item I have is a gun. I have a 4 shot derringer in .22. It's a lot of fun to shoot.
What's your best or most memorable moment as it relates to firearms?
My most memorable moments come from teaching. I love to watch the smile that comes across the face of a new shooter after their first shot. There's no other smile like it, full of confidence!
I own a gun because:
I believe I have the right to have the ability to defend myself and my family against a bad guy with a gun.
Tell us the best (or worst) gun advice you've ever been given.
In order to improve, you need to get training and practice is the best advice I was given.
What's your easiest gun to handle and shoot? Hardest?
All of them are relatively easy to handle and shoot. I do have an air weight revolver that isn't a joy to shoot, but still not difficult to handle.
What would be your recommendation for best entry-level gun?
The answer for this is longer than I have space for because there is no easy answer for this. But, this is one of the questions I get asked most often. It's such a personal choice.
Your ideal shopping trip: the mall or an outdoor outfitter?
An outdoor outfitter.
What do you think is the best home defense — firing or fleeing?
The answer to that fully depends on the situation. The best home defense is the one that allows you to see your family again after the event is over.
Who or what inspires you?
Women overcoming their fears and seeking education on firearms and taking responsibility for their own safety. That inspires me every day!
What's your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas because it's a time to celebrate the birth of Christ, a time for family and reflection. I love the sights, sounds and traditions of Christmas.
What do you do to relax and unwind — watch TV, listen to music, go to movies, catch a game, exercise, something else?
To relax and unwind, I go to the range for some Trigger Therapy!
Your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment hasn't happened yet. :)
