NRA Women is designed for female gun enthusiasts. It's a resource for news, education, events and more. And we're telling more stories of empowered women like you. Come explore, connect, celebrate and unite with the women of NRA.
Who or what got you into shooting?:
First experience was years ago when my ex husband who is a police officer thought I needed to carry a gun for protection. There were no instructions or practice sessions. I was afraid of the gun so I never pursued it. Then 4 years ago I met my present husband. He took me to the range one day and showed me that there was nothing to be afraid of.
Do you shoot handguns, shotguns, rifles or all of the above?:
Various handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
Why are you involved with the NRA or how do you support their efforts?:
I believe strongly in our 2nd amendment rights to keep and bear arms. I feel a lot safer when I am in a dark parking lot or a deserted area when I have my protection near. I strongly feel that the government needs to stay the hell out of my business. I believe the NRA fights for our rights especially the 2nd, and I believe that we can only fight the tyranny in this county today by standing together and fighting with all our might. DIVIDED WE WILL FALL.
Tell us about the first gun you owned or your favorite gun.:
My favorites are my Kimber 1911 45 handgun, a police model Remington 870 pump shotgun with no less than .000 buckshot, and more recently a Ruger Scout Rifle. I carry a 380 Walther PPK, although I prefer my 45 but it is a bit large for personal carry.
What's your current go-to gun?:
Kimber 1911 .45 semi-auto handgun.
What's your favorite shooting range or place to hunt?:
We belong to a shooting club and it had several ranges and is great place to practice any firearm imaginable. Bay Area Shooting Club in Crosby, TX. We are on our first deer lease this year in Fredricksburg,TX and it is nice also for hunting that is.
Do you have a favorite accessory or clothing item you won't go shooting or hunting without? What makes it so important?:
Not anything as of yet, but my shooting experiences are still in the early stages so who knows...
What's your best or most memorable moment as it relates to firearms?:
We went to the range for me to practice with the pump shotgun for home defense. First time to shoot it. My husband only brought .000bs and he thought I would only shoot a couple rounds and be done with the kick that it gives. But to his surprise I shot what was in the shotgun and a whole bandolier of shells a total of about 13 shots. He couldn't believe it but that pump made me feel so powerful.
I own a gun because:
First and foremost because it is my God given right as a citizen of this country the US of A. Second for self-protection. And last but far from least I love shooting them.
Tell us the best (or worst) gun advice you've ever been given.:
Best: The gun will not just go off by itself. There is no need to be scared of it
What's your easiest gun to handle and shoot? Hardest?:
I would say first is my 45 but I have really just started to use the Ruger scout rifle with the mauser bolt action and I enjoy that also. We also have a .223 auto with a great scope and that is really fun to shoot. Call it my "black gun."
Your ideal shopping trip: the mall or an outdoor outfitter?:
Outdoor outfitter by far!!
What do you think is the best home defense — firing or fleeing?:
If you can safely flee then it is always best to try to escape without anyone being harmed. I would however have my weapons with me as I flee just in case they are needed. But if there is not a safe escape route and you are pinned firing may be the only option.
Who or what inspires you?:
My best friend and wonderful husband. He has taught me so much not only about shooting and self-defense, but how to stand up for what is right and not be afraid to do that. I have found a passion inside that I never knew existed. Also his Dad is very inspirational and always encourages me.
What's your favorite holiday? Why?:
Probably Christmas time. I grew up in a large family. Four sisters and one brother and although we get together other times of the year, Christmas we have a family weekend that brings everyone together. We are a crowd and we all have our differences but I would not trade that "crowd" for anything else.
What do you do to relax and unwind — watch TV, listen to music, go to movies, catch a game, exercise, something else?:
Not much TV. We love sitting on our porch or out back on the patio or by the fire pit and just enjoying nature. We recently bought a jeep and so we are learning a little rock climbing in the jeep can be a lot of fun.
Your greatest accomplishment?:
Raising my three
wonderful kids. Although I was not always able to be there they still have
grown to be wonderful and responsible adults- well for the most part. In fact
things always happen for a reason and if anything, although due to extenuating
circumstances, I was not always able to bodily be with them growing up it has
brought us closer together as they grew to adults.
