Who or what got you into shooting?
My husband started me years ago, but going to the NRA Women's Wilderness Escape in 2010 really got me going. Spent nine days with 90 women shooting everything at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM. I fell in love with shooting and the Whittington Center.
Why are you involved with the NRA or how do you support their efforts?
I am passionate about this country and the freedoms our Constitution recognizes. The Second Amendment is the one that protects all our other rights. I discovered the NRA Women's Leadership Forum in 2010. I became more active and have been honored to join their Executive Committee.
What's your favorite shooting range or place to hunt?
My absolute favorite place to shoot, to camp, and spend a lot of time at is the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM. Just pick a range, so many to choose from. They are all surrounded by beautiful mountains and visited by pronghorn and Mule deer. I go back every year and now my husband is addicted too.
What's your best or most memorable moment as it relates to firearms?
I watched a woman shoot a gun for the first time in her life and hit the clay. She was hooked. I own a gun because: First, for self-defense - then for the fun of hitting targets, bullseye, steel, and clays.
Tell us the best (or worst) gun advice you've ever been given.
Since I am right-handed and left-eye dominant, shoot long guns left-handed.
What would be your recommendation for best entry-level gun?
Starting with a revolver, because until you use a semi-automatic enough to feel comfortable clearing jams you can't count on it. With a revolver, if it doesn't go bang, pull the trigger again.
Your ideal shopping trip: the mall or an outdoor outfitter?
I'm rarely a mall shopper, but love Cabela's.
What do you think is the best home defense — firing or fleeing?
If you and your loved ones can get out safely, do it. If not, stop the assailant with your weapon.
What's your favorite holiday? Why?
Independence Day, because it reminds us of the freedoms we enjoy and still strive to keep. Besides, I love the fireworks.
